조계종과 보건복지부가 지원하는 ‘나는 절로’ 템플스테이 지원 열기가 매우 뜨겁다. 청춘 남녀를 매칭하는 인기 TV쇼 ‘나는 솔로’를 연상시킨다. 20-30대 미혼 남녀가 사찰에 머물면서 서로를 알아가는 기회를 가지게 되고, 템플스테이가 끝날 때쯤 커플이 생기는 경우도 많다고 한다. 사찰에 머물면서 일상에서 벗어나 마음의 여유도 가지고, 마음이 맞는 이성도 찾아볼 수 있는 기회여서 지원자들의 경쟁률이 치열하다고 한다.
요즘 언론에서 가장 핫피플 중 한 명은 ‘뉴진 스님’이다. ‘뉴진(new進)은 ‘새롭게 나아가다’라는 의미를 가지는 영어와 한자의 합성어인데, 개그맨 윤성호의 법명이다. 윤성호는 실제 조계사의 오심 스님의 가르침을 받았고, ‘뉴진’이라고 하는 법명을 받았다고 한다. 뉴진 스님은 EDM 음악에 맞춰 불교 교리를 쉽고 흥겹게 설파하고 있다. 뉴진 스님의 ‘부처 핸썸’, ‘고통을 이겨내 극락왕생’이라는 외침들은 MZ들을 매료시키고 있다.
잘생긴 외모 덕에 ‘꽃스님’으로 불리고 있는 범정스님을 보기 위해 많은 사람들이 화엄사를 찾고 있다고 한다. 화엄사의 야간 사찰 탐방 프로그램은 접수 4시간 만에 신청이 마감되기도 했다.
외국인들의 템플스테이 참여도 인기이다. 하버드 대학생들의 전통불교문화체험 프로그램이 성황리에 마무리되었다는 기사가 보도되었고, 해외 학교들이 단체로 해외 체험 프로그램의 일환으로 한국의 템플스테이를 신청하고 방문하는 사례도 늘고 있다.
‘부처님 오신날’을 앞두고 조계종 총본산 사찰인 조계사에서는 음악에 맞춰 노래와 춤을 연습하는 젊은이들을 볼 수 있다. 부처님 오신날 행사를 준비하고 있는 젊은이들이다. 외국인들의 모습도 눈에 띈다.
부처님의 가르침과 자비가 일상에 지친 젊은이들의 마음을 어루만지고 있다. 도심의 거리를 장식하고 있는 알록달록한 연등들을 바라보며 조용히 중얼거려본다. “부처 핸썸!!!”

Monk Newjin preaches Buddhist doctrines easily and joyfully to EDM music, and his cries of 'Buddha Handsome [bucheo-haensseom]' and 'Overcome pain and be reborn in paradise' are attracting MZs.
Many people visit Hwaeomsa Temple to see Monk Beomjeong, called the 'Flower Monk (Handsome monk)' due to his attractive appearance. Applications for Hwaeomsa Temple's night temple tour program are closed within four hours of being submitted.
Foreigners are also frequent participants in temple stays.
