경동시장 일대는 대한민국에서 가장 많은 한약재가 판매되는 곳이고, 물가가 싸서 노인 비율이 매우 높은 지역이다. 비슷한 예로 일본 도쿄의 스가모 역 주변 상점가는 도쿄에서도 노인들이 많이 찾는 지역이어서 ‘노인들의 하라주쿠’라는 별명을 갖고 있는데, 서울의 경동시장이 위치한 제기동은 ‘노인들의 홍대’로 불리기도 한다.

1960년대에 시간이 멈춘 것 같은 이 곳에 입점 조건이 까다롭기로 유명한 세계적 카페 브랜드 스타벅스가 2022년 12월에 입점하였다. 예전 경동극장 건물에 자리잡은 스타벅스1960의 문을 열고 들어가면 독특한 내부 구조가 시선을 사로잡는다. 1960년대 개장했던 경동극장은 오래전 문을 닫았지만, 카페 내부는 예전 극장의 모습을 그대로 간직하고 있다. 극장 좌석이었던 곳에서 차를 마실 수 있고, 주문은 벽면의 스크린 빔을 통해 확인할 수 있다. 스타벅스1960점에서만 구매할 수 있는 특별한 굿즈도 판매 중이다. 매장 내 무대에서는 지역 문화예술인들이 정기적으로 공연을 하기도 한다.
스타벅스 주변에는 금성전파사 등 레트로 감성을 물씬 풍기는 다양한 점포들도 옹기종기 자리잡고 있다. 특히 금성전파사에는 LG전자의 전신인 금성사 전자 제품들이 전시되어 있고, 최신 LG전자 제품들을 체험할 수 있는 공간도 마련되어 있다.
이번 주말에는 강남역이나 삼청동보다는 경동시장에 가서 예전 서울의 모습을 느껴보는 것은 어떨까?

The unique interior structure of Starbucks 1960 catches your eye when you open the door and enter the former Kyungdong Theater building in which it is located. The theater, which opened in the 1960s, closed long ago, but the cafe's inside retains the appearance of the old theater. Furthermore, on the in-store stage, local cultural artists regularly perform.
