Walk a short way west along the old stone walls of Gyeongbokgung Palace, past the point where most tour groups turn back, and the city suddenly changes. Traffic noise fades into the sound of running water. Concrete gives way to pine trees. This is where Seoul's quieter, older self begins — right at the mouth of a valley on Inwangsan Mountain.
The valley has carried its name for centuries, said to come from how clear and pleasant the sound of its stream was to those who once gathered here. It was beautiful enough to be painted by Jeongseon, one of the great landscape artists of the late Joseon dynasty. A few benches still sit at the entrance today, a good spot to catch your breath before the climb begins. For anyone visiting Seoul for the first time, stumbling onto real wilderness this close to downtown tends to leave an impression.

The trail winds past a small Buddhist hermitage and a mountain spring before reaching a striking rock formation set against a wall of granite. Its folds and creases resemble the pleats of a traditional skirt — which is exactly how it got its name: Chimabawi, "Skirt Rock." Behind that name lies one of the most quietly heartbreaking stories in five centuries of Joseon royal history.
It centers on King Jungjong, the 11th monarch of the Joseon dynasty, and the woman who became his first wife — married to him while he was still an ordinary prince with no expectation of ever taking the throne. In 1506, on the day a group of officials staged a coup and installed him as king, soldiers surrounded his residence so suddenly that he assumed he was about to be executed and nearly took his own life. It was his wife who kept her composure, read the situation correctly, and talked him out of it.
The coup succeeded, and her husband became king — but their marriage did not survive the transition. Because her father's family was tied to the ousted former ruler, she was forced out of the palace within a week of becoming queen. From that point on, she lived out the rest of her life in seclusion at her family's home, never remarried and never permitted to return.
According to legend, the new king never stopped thinking of her. He was said to gaze often toward the direction of her home, unable to visit but unwilling to forget. When word of this reached her, she took her own red skirt and draped it across a rock on Inwangsan, high enough to be seen from the palace — a silent message sent across the mountain. The two never met again in life, but the story survived in the name of the rock itself. It would be nearly two centuries before she was formally restored to the rank of queen, long after both of them were gone.
Trail Information
Route: Valley entrance → mountain hermitage → spring → Chimabawi Rock
Distance: About 1.5 km (1 mile)
Time: Roughly 1.5 hours
Difficulty: Moderate — manageable for first-time hikers
The trailhead is easy to reach: take Line 3 to Gyeongbokgung Station, exit 3, and catch the local shuttle bus to the last stop. On the way down, though, skip the bus and walk instead — the descent passes the former boarding house of the poet Yun Dong-ju, marked with a small plaque, and it's worth the detour.
Once you're back down, take some time to wander the old neighborhood tucked between Inwangsan and Gyeongbokgung Palace. There's a traditional market known for its pan-fried tteokbokki, and a weathered secondhand bookshop that's become something of a quiet landmark. It's a side of Seoul that palace tours alone rarely reveal — everyday neighborhood life sitting right next to a five-hundred-year-old royal tragedy. For travelers who only have a short window to see another face of this city, it's hard to beat.
